ALP 2 – Environmental Portrait

Yassin Alsalman aka The Narcicyst

Yassin was born in Basra, Iraq and raised in Dubai. He then moved to Montreal at the age of 17, He began his career as part of a Hip Hop trio called Euphrates. The group had some success but disbanded after one of the members unexpected passing on November 26th, 2004. Yassin has since pursued a solo career, recording 4 mixtapes and two studio albums. ( The Narcicyst & Mr. Asthmatic  )

He has also starred in a movie that was filmed in Dubai last year called ” City Of life ” (It’s really good ) and was featured in the TED x events. ( Also really worth a watch )

Overall he’s an extremely talented and creative person who has come along way and will only continue to grow as a person and artist. For a look at his latest released single check out “Hamdulillah”.

I asked him to describe who he was, where he’s from and what he does. Got back this humble answer.

My name is Yassin or the Narcicyst, which ever seems more human to you. I make music, write and exist. Music is my passion and livelihood, so I struck a beautiful harmony somewhere in the cosmos. I write because I take in a lot of information, and I think I would be running out of gigabytes to compute this life. Teena’s my  friend and she took these pictures of me, as I got my Iraq Star on.

No ambient/Only flash - 1/160 s @ f 8.0 ISO 200

Ambient light + Flash - 1/100 s @ f 16 ISO 200

Only Ambient light - 0.3 s @ F 3.8 ISO 200

I think these images could be used in a music oriented magazine, possibly as a part of a press kit for the talented emcee/actor/writer.

For this assignment I struggled greatly with my flash because, well.. I’ve never owned one before. After several google searches and a great deal of poking around my settings I finally figured out how to get to the channel area on the flash, once that was set it was hard again to figure out which lighting was best ( bounce effect or through the umbrella ) but once again after a few test shots I got the hang of it.

I would have to say the most difficult part was the photo without any ambient light. For one, I couldn’t see a damn thing. But the shots surprised me. Better than expected. Overall a really good experience, and a really good model.
